lesson 12

A few variations on a theme
In this lesson:

1 a-b) Nilsson & Aerosmith: 16th-notes (pointed)
2) Spandau Ballet
3) Skunk Anansi (a tomtom and a rim)
Variations
One of the most frequently asked questions was wether or not I did have transcriptions of songs, or would like to make them.
Well, I decided not to give in to this request, simply because this would require a lot of work ...(so many songs, so little time...).
So it's just small parts of the songs here...
Here's where YOU, friendly fellow-drummer (M/F), come in...
Any contribution on your part would be welcome and will receive a special place on the site...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This lesson is just a little "let's-practice-what-we-already-know-lesson", to see if you still remember a few things you've learned sofar.
They are also selected totally at random!!
Of course its purpose is to show you guys and gals what other drummers did with that same old stuff!
Maybe it will lead you to a couple of brand new ideas for your next song!
The patterns shown are usually only small parts of the song, I don't have (and I will not make) a full transcription!
It's just to get you started...
All these patterns are used in the songs by the bands mentioned, but of course you'll probably find them in other songs, too.

Example 1a, from: 'Elastic Baby' by Nilsson (verse)
Nilsson is a great up and coming Dutch Band and if you like to know more about them, please visit this page.
1a) 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
           _______ _______ _______ _______
           | | | | | | | |
    |---------------------------------------------------|
    | . |
    |:----------------0-----------------------0--------:|
    | | | |
    |----------------|-----------------------|----------|
          0 | 0 0 0 |
         | | | | | |
         | | --| | |
         | ---------- -------

As you noticed the dot (".") was there on purpose, to indicate a value of 3/16 notes, when at the "a" of count number "2" the bassdrum has an extra bar ("--") to show it's a 16th note.

Example 1b, from: 'Walk this way' by Aerosmith (verse)
The difference in the pattern is that you use a "open hihat" which opens on "1" as indicated by (o),
and closes on the"+", indicated by (-).

1b) 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
          o -
           _______ _______ _______ _______
           | | | | | | | |
     |---------------------------------------------------|
     | . |
     |:--------------0------------------------0---------:|
     | | | |
     |--------------|------------------------|-----------|
          0 | 0 0 0 |
         | | | | | |
         | | --| | |
         | ----------- -------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example 2, from: 'Gold' by Spandau Ballet (verse)
The original pattern is played really fast. Less can be more...
How many of you still remember this one?

2) 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
                o -
           _______ _______ _______ _______
           | | | | | | | |
     |---------------------------------------------------|
     | |
     |:--------------0-----------------------0----------:|
     | | | |
     |--------------|-----------------------|------------|
         0 | 0 |
        | | |
        | | |
        | --------

Example 3, from: 'Hedonism' by Skunk Anansi (verse)
Where a tomtom (HT) played with your left-hand (if right-handed) and a rim-click ("X") on the snare make the difference...

3) 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
          o -
           _______ _______ _______ _______
           | | | | | | | |
     |----------------.-----------------------------------|
 HT |---------------0------------------------------------|
     |:-------------|------------------------X-----------:|
