LESSON 11
Sixteenths: singles and mated
Contents of this lesson:
1) A sixteenth at the second of count 4
2) A "dotted note". Sixteenth at first and the last position
3) Same pattern with a SD. 4) ?????
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi again, another lesson for you and this time we're talking sixteenth notes. Still remember them? Or do you wanna go back to lesson 3 first?
OK, you did... well let's get things straight first: you CAN combine sixteenth and eighth notes in one pattern! You DO NOT have to use ALL the sixteenths of one count! Wow, what a surprise, huh?
Now while you are recovering from this experience, we go to our first pattern.
I have to make up something new here, an extra little line at count 4 (on the "e"), that indicates we deal with sixteenth notes.
The sixteenth note is also placed at the "e" of "4 e + a".
Please look at the first pattern to see how it's done!
1)
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

The "feel" of this pattern should be a little bit "funky". Imagine you're going to the doctor and he tests your reflexes, hammering on your knee.
Of course you reflect directly and kick him in the .....! That's the way your bassdrum should follow up on the snare.... (sorry, doc!)
Ok. You got a sixteenth bass on the second sixteenth, but you can also put one further away, on the last sixteenth.
We need an extra sign here (.) --> That's a "dot", like DOT-COM, for those who didn't know!
A dot in music, however, says this:
ADD HALF OF THE VALUE OF THE NOTE IT STANDS BEHIND
(THE DOTTED NOTE) TO THAT NOTE.
If you have a quarter note with a dot, you'll get:
1/4 (same as 2/8) + 1/8 (half of a quarter) = 3/8
1/8 (same as 2/16) + 1/16 (half of an eighth) = 3/16
I hope you'll find the following pattern also amusing:
Our last extra sign ( */ ) represents a eighth rest, BTW... /
2)
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

You see that combination of a (.) and a (-) at the last sixteenth often, so you better get used to it. Here it meant (3/16, so one left= 4/16).
Should you be a little careless and forget the dot, then there would be (1/8=2/16 + 1/16= 3/16 --> you miss one at a regular beat!
Should you leave the (-) out, then you've got 3/16 + 1/8 = 5/16 --> wrong again, too much 16th's.
3)
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

Problems: we need 4/16 to make 1/4
COUNT #2:
Yes, you've got it right: again a hit on the last sixteenth (count nr.2), this time a SD. So you DO need an extra little BAR there and a DOT. The DOT says: "My name is 3/16."
Count #3:
Yes again, "3 e +" has this combination of two bars (=) indicating sixteenths and (-) indicating 8th-notes. The "+" of count 3 is worth TWO sixteenths (a played note and a rest, which makes ONE eighth note and together with the first two sixteenths - that's the "3" and the "e" - we have again 4/16ths which is what we need)
The pattern used here is not uncommon.
