lesson 10 : MORE PARADIDDLES

More Paradiddles
Contents of this lesson:

1) Two very easy patterns
2) Both combined into one single pattern of 16th notes
3) Another great one! .... But, that's the same thing!
4) Second different pattern
5) Other combinations

Hello out there! It has been really a long time since you've heared something new from this site! That's because I had a real busy time and because I had to repair my damaged site. Some stupid a******s f***** up the graphics and it took some time to do it.
Though you've already seen some paradiddles, a second lesson about paradiddles I thought would be fun to come back with...?
If you forgot something or are not sure about the notation, go to Drums on the Internet
You may also go back to my homepage

Paradiddles once again
Let's pretend you've studied the older patterns thoroughly. You did, didn't you? Then this one should give you not that much problems...
We'll start off with our first two patterns:
Both are just a sequence of using the four skins in front of you, like this - snare (right) tom 1 (left) tom 3 (right) floor tom (left) - floor tom (left) tom 2 (right) tom1 (left) snare (right) One-&-two-&-three-&-four:

     1) 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
             ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
             | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
 TOM 1 |-----|-0---|--|--|-0---|--|--|--|--|-0---|--|--|-0---|--|
 TOM 2 |-----|----0---|--|----0---|--|--|-0------|--|-0------|--|
 SD |:---0---------|-0---------|-:|:-|-------0---|--------|-:|
       |--------------|-----------|--|--|-----------|--------|--|
 FT |-------------0-----------0---|-0-----------0--------0---|

Until now you haven't played a single paradiddle yet....
But right now you're gonna (if you're not already stuck with the patterns you've just learned, for they are also fun to use as fills at themselves...) paradiddle a lot... (I hope).

    2)
             1 e + a 2 e + a
               __ __ __ __ __ __
              |__|__|__| |__|__|__|
              | | | | | | | |
  Tom 1 |----|-0---|--|--|--|-0---|------|
  Tom 2 |----|----0---|--|-0------|------|
  SD |:--0---------|--|-------0------:|
         |-------------|--|---------------|
  FT |------------0--0----------------|

Well, that's a lot of fun, you think. Let's try another one...
Another one? Not really, but rather a "translation" or "revoicing" of the same paradiddle: the only thing is that this one (as far as I'm concerned) is easier to play in sequence with a (4-quarter beat) rhythm.
You start with the LAST THREE notes of the paradiddle you see above, and the rest you will see for yourself...! The bass-drums under the paradiddle are optional, but I'm sure you use do them (YES!!!... you can do it, allright!!)

   3) R L R R L R L L
                              __ __ __ __ __ __
             ---- ---- |__|__|__| |__|__|__|
             | | | | | | | | | | | |
   HH X X X X | | | | | | | |
   Tom 1 |--------------|----|-0---|--|-0---|--|--|----|
   Tom 2 |--------------|---0------|--|----0---|--|----|
   SD |--------0-----|---------0--0---------|--|----|
         |-------|------|----------------------|--|----|
   FT |-------|------|---------------------0--0-----|
   BD 0 0 0
           | | |
           | | |

At least something NEW would be appropriate right now, wouldn't it?
That's why there is still another paradiddle to do every time you did the last one.
Don't worry, just hit 'em and sigh....
The next one you see is a paradiddle between your FT and Tom 1: you play this paradiddle in a kind of "sweeping" motion, if you play it faster.
Could be one to show off, and dazzle your audience with, after they have been knocked out (almost, now this will be the final blow) by the last one.

    4)
         R L R R L R L L
          __ __ __ __ __ __
         |__|__|__| |__|__|__|
         | | | | | | | |
     |--0---|--|--|--|-0--0--0----|
     |------|--|--|--|------------|
     |------|--|--|--|------------|
     |------|--|--|--|------------|
     |-----0--0--0--0-------------|

Well, we've almost finished the lesson for today, but there's still some practise to do, that will make your fellow-drummers cry...
Next to the standard paradiddle or the inverted one (lesson 7!), there are some combinations of paradiddles with single strokes, that carry more illustrious names, like "double paradiddle" or even "triple paradiddle". You are right, this means trouble...
What I will do now is give you a few basic patterns and suggest you treat the patterns the same way as I did with the previous standard paradiddle, i.e. make something beautiful out of them by changing for example the accent (">")

  5)
                      > >
       Double Paradiddle: R L R L R R - L R L R L L
                           > >
       Triple Paradiddle: R L R L R L R R - L R L R L R L L
                           > >
       Para-Diddle-Diddle R L R R L L - L R L L R R

Right, that's what I had in store this time. See you soon for the next
lesson!
